To add to the list of manual transmission whine issues: We have heard some transmissions whine in neutral due to excessive backlash between the maindrive gear/countergear in 4th. This whine can cause an M20 or M21 to sound like an M22. Mine is an M22 it has more like a "growl" while in Neutral with the chutch engaged.

You cannot compare a 40-50 year old M22 Rockcrusher 2.20:1 to the TKO, the original M22 is antiquated for comparison. There are newer AutoGear M22 series and M23 series 4 speeds that have a 2.20:1, 2.56:1, and the 2.98:1 1st gear ratio to better suit performance and drivability.

The M22 is the "rockcrusher" tranny. It's a bit more heavy duty than the M21 and much rarer. It's called a rockcrusher due to it straighter cut gears which whine ( and are stronger ). The M21 is a standard Muncie 4 speed. They both have the same ratios beginning with a 2.20 1st.

The M20 was somewhat weak. The M21 was the most common and the M22 was the Straight-cut gear, HD model (race), "Rockcrusher" (noisey). And to further elaborate, I had an M22 in a moderately "built" big-block (LS5) Chevelle SS. It laughed at all the abuse I could throw at it for years.
